Use Case
A specialty bed is usually a transitional location for a patient, such as a surgical bed or a bed where a procedure is performed.
What you see
If a patient's current location is a specialty bed, then the Occupied Beds list in the BedTracking® console will display “PROC” (for procedure) in the Status column.
If a patient’s current location is a specialty bed, then the electronic bedboard® view view in Capacity IQ® PreAdmit application application will also display “PROC” in the bed status cell.
How to set
To designate a bed as a specialty bed, the administrator selects “Specialty” in the Location Type list when adding or editing the location in the Admin Tool or Admin > Settings > Capacity Management component.
Holding vs Non-Holding
When a bed has a location type of “Specialty”, the Holding Bed bed setting can be enabled or disabled. If the Holding Bed bed setting is enabled, then the bed is often called a specialty holding location. If it is not enabled, the bed is often called a specialty non-holding location.
Specialty Locations - Holding
Specialty Holding Location—A bed in a pre-procedure, procedure, or post-procedure area.
A bed placement request is needed to assign a patient to a specialty holding location.
If a patient already has a home location and then is transported or transferred to a specialty holding location, the patient's home location will NOT change.
If a patient is admitted to a specialty holding location and does not have an existing home location, a bed placement request will be created automatically. Admissions or transfers to the location will not close bed placement requests. The patient will still appear in list views in the Capacity IQ® PreAdmit application.
The administrator can configure a PreAdmit application global setting so that an outpatient's status will be changed automatically from Outpatient to PreAdmit when the patient is transported, admitted, or transferred to a specialty holding location. A bed placement request will also be created for the patient automatically.
Specialty Locations - Non-Holding
Specialty Non-Holding—This is also a bed in a pre-procedure, procedure, or post-procedure area.
However, a bed placement request is not usually needed to assign a patient to a specialty non-holding bed.
A specialty non-holding bed is typically for outpatient surgery.
If a patient already has a home location and then is transported or transferred to a specialty non-holding location, the patient's home location will NOT change.
However, the patient's specialty location might be displayed on the electronic bedboard® view as PROC/SPEC.
Other Functionality
If a patient is transported to a specialty location, the patient's home location will not change automatically and the status of the patient's home location will not change to “Dirty” automatically.
If the Master Configuration setting called “Dirty the Patient Home Location on Occupying a Specialty Bed for Patients with Pending Transfer Status” is enabled, then the home location of a patient in Pending Transfer status will be marked “Dirty” when that patient begins to occupy a specialty bed.
